Shutters in St Albans
From the Georgian frontages around Fishpool Street to the Edwardian bays of Fleetville, St Albans windows are rarely standard sizes.

St Albans has one of the largest concentrations of listed buildings in Hertfordshire, and a conservation area network that takes in the city centre, Fishpool Street, Romeland and St Michael's. In those streets the windows are usually timber sash or timber casement in original openings, often out of square after two or three centuries of movement, and any window dressing has to sit inside the reveal without touching the frame. Shutters suit that constraint better than most alternatives because they are made to the opening rather than hung across it.
Move out to Fleetville, Camp and Clarence Park and the stock changes to late Victorian and Edwardian terraces and semis, where the defining feature is the square or splayed front bay with three or five lights. These are the openings that defeat off the shelf blinds, and they are the most common reason people in AL1 ask about shutters. A bay is measured as a set of linked panels with mitred corner posts so the run reads as one piece rather than three separate blinds.
North and east of the centre, Marshalswick, Jersey Farm and Sandridge are largely post war and modern, with wide casement and tilt and turn units and, increasingly, rear extensions with bifolds and roof glazing. Those rooms usually need a mix: full height shutters on the tall units, tier on tier where privacy at street level matters, and blinds or skylight systems on the glass overhead.
Every job starts with a home consultation, and nothing is ordered until a full technical survey has been done and the price is confirmed. Installation is by our trusted team, and every shutter is backed by our ten-year guarantee.
