Shutters in Chelsea

Almost the whole of Chelsea sits within conservation areas, and a great many houses are listed, which puts real constraints on what can change at the window. Shutters are usually welcomed because they sit inside the room and inside the existing reveal, but the survey matters more than anywhere else: original Georgian and early Victorian sash boxes are rarely square, and the panel has to be built to the opening as found.

The classic Chelsea section is a tall, narrow sash on the first floor drawing room with a much shorter window above and a lower one at garden level. Working through a whole house means keeping the mid rail height consistent as a visual line even though every window is a different size, and that is a drawing exercise before it is a manufacturing one.

The mansion blocks off the King's Road, in Cadogan and around Sloane Avenue, bring their own rules: many are leasehold with restrictions on anything visible from the street. Shutters painted in a neutral white and hung inside the reveal usually satisfy those clauses, but the freeholder's requirement should be checked before ordering, and we will put the specification in writing so it can be submitted.
